Who am I without the role that made me successful?
A founder, athlete, executive or creator can become inseparable from the role through which success was earned. Identity can expand without dismissing the achievement.
The achievement and the person
Work often provides more than income. It supplies belonging, structure, recognition and a place in which ability is tested. When the role changes, the loss can be felt even when the transaction was chosen.
Success is something a person has achieved. It should not become the only explanation of who that person is.
Do not rush to replace yourself
The temptation is to recreate intensity through another acquisition, project or public role. A new challenge may be worthwhile, though it should be selected for what it serves rather than for its ability to restore a familiar identity.
Expand the story
Identity becomes more resilient when it rests on several sources of meaning.
