What should all this now be for?
Accumulation provides visible measures of progress. Purpose is less easily measured. Contribution, useful work, mentorship and institution-building can create a second orientation.
A different measure of progress
The first part of a wealth creator’s journey is often measured through revenue, valuation, ownership and growth. The next stage calls for measures that are more personal and less visible.
Purpose is not found by filling every hour. It develops through attention to what remains worth doing when applause and necessity are removed.
Contribution before display
Contribution need not begin with a foundation or a grand public promise. It may begin with time, judgement and usefulness: mentoring a successor, strengthening a family relationship or helping an institution solve a problem that matters.
Questions worth asking
A coherent purpose is specific enough to guide choices and broad enough to adapt.
- Which problems continue to hold my attention?
- Where is my experience genuinely useful?
- What do I want my time to feel like?
- Which responsibilities are mine and which should be delegated?
- What would I pursue without recognition?
