In 1967, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach died as the last personal sole owner of the Krupp industrial enterprise. His son renounced the inheritance, and the company moved into a corporate form owned by a charitable foundation.
The Krupp dynasty achieved remarkable industrial continuity while accumulating a moral inheritance later generations could not escape. Its story asks what stewardship requires when family pride, national power and enterprise become inseparable, and preservation of the name cannot answer for the uses to which it was put.
Ownership had been intensely personal. The enterprise expected loyalty and offered paternal systems of housing, healthcare and social provision. Yet responsibility is measured by how an institution treats those able to challenge it as well as those prepared to accept its care.
Patriotism, commercial survival and obedience were used to rationalise collaboration with the Nazi regime. A company of Krupp’s power was not a passive object. Owners appointed leaders, received benefits and supplied capability. Responsibility could not be delegated downward to managers or upward to the state.
The later foundation preserved institutional continuity and gave the fortune a public-purpose form. Philanthropy may express responsibility, but cannot purchase innocence. Stewardship of reputation begins with accuracy and the confidence to allow history to remain morally complicated.
