In April 2011, Pietro Ferrero, joint chief executive of the family confectionery group, died suddenly while in South Africa. He was forty-seven.
Ferrero survived the death of a powerful founder because later generations understood that inheritance created an obligation to contribute. Its story shows how a family enterprise can preserve a defining culture while expecting each successor to add capability, judgement and value of their own.
The company’s continuity did not depend on one uninterrupted founder. It depended on relatives who could receive an unfinished idea and enlarge it. A better instruction than “keep everything the same” is to preserve the capacity that produced the original success. In Ferrero’s case, that included product insight, manufacturing discipline, brand-building and a long horizon.
Growth was not a denial of loss. It was evidence that the family institution could carry grief without allowing grief to suspend its obligations. The family also had to accept that operational authority could be entrusted without surrendering ownership, while professional executives had to recognise the owner’s horizon and values as legitimate constraints.
Patient capital earns legitimacy when patience benefits the resilience and responsibility of the enterprise, not only the privacy of the family. The work of inheritance is never finished. That is precisely what gives it meaning.
